Automobilist is a complex individually produced art piece. It is comprised of three volumes of art prints interlaced with stories that follow the Century sequentially. Its production involves a number of different printing techniques. Each book is custom made upon request, in a method exclusively developed by Velocity Group.
Each Volume has the name of the person for whom it has been produced printed on the title page. Each book is dated & numbered and signed by the author.
New edition format is 12” X 8”. This is the full frame aspect ratio of the original 35mm E6 Slides. As are the digital images captured for this new edition. Each page is an individual art piece.
Automobilist covers the Century in 887 pages, containing over 500+ gallery quality color prints and 54+ dou-tones of our special chromatic saturation format. There are over 154 pages of stories.
Automobilist Century is printed on the finest art archival papers. The stock chosen here is a silk textured heavy paper. Its surface provides a subtle sheen of the finest Ilford photographic enlargement stock. Each page has the image quality and visual depth of an art gallery enlargement that has just been removed from the developer.
The photographic compositions are of the art director style developed by SSC in the late 1980s, and evolved through the present day. It is a style of imagery that draws on the historic knowledge the automobiles themselves. Visually the imagery is the convergence of abstract and representation art. Through this art directors style of intense color beneath natural light these timeless industrial designs fully reveal their character. These are three time coded art galleries bound for your own personal reflection on the 20th Century.
The binding of the three volumes is the finest lamb hide leather in green, with very fine grain characteristics. Gold was selected here for the title stamping on the fronts and the logo and volume stampings on the spines. Special green / gold head bands were selected with a gold missal ribbon for continuity of chromatic theme. The Slip case is quite special. The walls are double thickness, and it is covered with a textured graphite stock which plays off of direct lighting most intriguingly. A very nice touch here, in design and for the purposes of longevity, is the sliding tray of the slip case. This will allow you to pull the books out using the tray.
Each book is a individually produced art piece. As such the production times are about two months for press work and binding.
