In this episode of Excerpts we open to a couple of chapters in the Alfa book.
The editorial purpose of Alfa Romeo: View from the Mouth of the Dragon was three fold;
1) The history of the automobile is mainly populated by companies that built their entire reputation on one, or two engine designs. Here we explore the Milanese company's seemingly infinite engineering creativity. We examine the 22 individual engine models, and their variations made between 1909 and 1940.
2) We set about to art direct the publication to have the graphic look of a book that was produced in the 1950s. To achieve this we produced over 70 engineering illustrations in a unique style that echoes the lithographs of the era.
3) The editorial perspective is powered by our own experience in the Italian motor business. So here we take the reader inside the corporate and political landscape of the times discussed.
The chapters presented here pick up the story with the introduction of the seminal 6C 2300. With this car Alfa Romeo was introducing the modern twin cam engine to series production, as well as bringing independent suspensions, front and rear, to a road car.
We also discuss the transitional, yet innovative grand Prix car, the 8C 35. And the 4C 1500, the economy car that almost was.
