Friday Racing at the track was enhanced by the new concrete entry bridge, beautiful work done in repaving the track without ruining the delightful quirks that make this steepest of tracks, so beloved by the likes of Sterling Moss, so challenging. As usual the first morning races Group 1 – 1957 to 1967 SCCA Small Displacement faced the usual marine fog that draped the track and sent chilled fans to the coffee stands. Friday’s Group 1 win was taken by Chip Fudge in his 1960 Huffaker Genie Mark IV. But the real action was between Horatio Fitz-Simon in his hot 1964 Lotus Elan 26R taking second, and Cameron Healy in the classic 1955 Porsche-powered Cooper nicknamed the “Pooper” taking third. With Rob Walton in his 1966 Lotus Elan 26R taking fourth. The F-S Elan and the “Pooper” doing everything but swapping paint with daring and well-executed passing and repassing all over the track.
Dennis Adair’s return to racing this year in his 1959 Lotus Elite brought home the Lotus Contingency towards the back of the pack, but it was nice to see Dennis and his son Kevin in the fray.
