After pioneering digital publishing in the early to mid 1990s, we were called upon to create an educational data base and kiosk system for the tasting room of a high end wine store in Carmel Valley. The working thesis was to assist the wine buyer in more fully understanding what goes into a good bottle of wine. Thereby being able to fully define its character, from its farming origins through the winemaking. The general premise at the time was that wine is bought by price. Price though often does not reflect character, complexity and quality. Neither does the promotional copy presented on the bottle as explanation of what lies within. At the heart of this project, code named Amphorae, was an annual data stream provided by the winemakers. As this was rolled out it would give a reference point to the wine buyer allowing them to more deeply understand the process, from vineyard to bottle, and be able to compare and contrast. This is information often provided to visitors of the vineyards. This last point brings forward the method of art direction for presentation of the information: wine buyers generally develop a sentimentality and loyalty for the vineyards visited. We spent 18 months capturing every step of the growing and winemaking process. Through this series of photographic essays gathered at every stage of the crop production and wine processing, we could present the data stream with the visuals of wine production to take the buyer on a virtual vineyard visit and define the wines in the bottle they were holding in the wine shop or the wine and spirits section of their local super market.
The data stream was composed with the able assistance of Tom Lane. Tom created some of the finest Rhone style wines as winemaker at Concannon, prior to its being bought by box ‘o wines. Also lending to the data side of the project was Jerry Seps owner of Storybook winery. Jerry, a retired professor of European History, produces arguably the finest Zinfandel. There was also input from the Napa Valley Vintners and the Sonoma County wine growers association. Take the full format tour of the vineyards.
