The Formula had Changed
In 1968 the FIA lowered the prototype displacement to 3 liters. Yet the grids were still filled with GT40s and Lola T70s. In a nod to these teams the FIA opened a new loop hole allowing a new sports racing class of 5 liters. This would fall under new homologation requirements; rather than 50 cars produced, it was lowered to 25. Rather than a simple 5 liter class with an expiration date on the older team cars, it initiated one of the great competition series. To meet the challenge Porsche created the 917. Maranello responded with the 512. The public responded with enough enthusiasm that Steve McQueen made a film.

Future Defined by Watercolor
In the dining room of ItalDesign's headquarters in Turin are a number of watercolor paintings. All signed by Giorgetto Giugiaro they place his radically modern designs at speed through Italian landscapes. From these sketches came a complete rethinking of engineering, design and ergonomics that would reshape the automobile, and refresh the world's roads with the contemporary.

Tale of two chassis, and the racing acronyms
In 1981 the FIA and the new North American racing league IMSA, decided to create two new racing classes, Group C for the former, and GTP for the latter. A minor variation in design requirements between the two, then resulted the FIA's Group C1 and IMSA GTP lights. Ironically as the acronyms continued to expand through the names of competitors cars and sponsors, The FIA, with its twelve races, and IMSA's twenty six races achieved their goal of reinvigorating European and North American racing…and the gate of every race reflected this.

Enzo Ferrari had passed away less than a month before the Italian Grand Prix. This factor alone promised to make the race at Monza a madhouse. I had been in-country on business for almost three weeks. The combination of these two factors made the invitation to attend Monza as a guest intriguing. The decision to watch it at a bar in Zurich made for a much more relaxed afternoon. Considering the results, the afternoon lacked none of the promised enthusiasm.

My own motivation was to tell the story of the Motorsport division and the car they actually made: the M5.  As the Eighties had progressed, it seemed every BMW was wearing an M badge.  The more suspect the Beemer, the more pronounced the badge."

We soon realized there was something important going on within the works at Campogalliano.  Something of a renaissance actually.  No, it wasn't the myth wrapped in the rebirth of the Bugatti name.  Many a trust fund enthusiast over the years had brought together just enough capital to fail reviving a great name.  No, what had touched me was an underlying excitement that something truly modern was going on here."

Driving Through Another Dimension
"Fabrizio and I had taken off from Quail Lodge and motored briskly east up Carmel Valley.  We got to the intersection of Los Laureles grade, made the left, and nailed it up hill.  I was driving as Fabrizio filled me in on what he had wanted to achieve with this compound curve carbon fiber research project. This Nazca M12 was Fabrizio’s first personally directed design and engineering project to come from his Dad’s firm ItalDesign."
